This past Thursday, I got to go to Trier, Germany, the oldest city in Germany and oldest city north of the Alps, even older than Rome. The base offers a tour every other Thursday for the day. We had a tour guide that showed us how to use the train station. It's a lot more complicated than you may think, especially when everything is in German. Luckily, I had another spouse that joined me on the day trip adventure.
The train was fascinating and took about 30 minutes for our arrival. It took you through the valleys and was very scenic. We arrived around 10:30am, in time for our 2nd breakfast, according to German standards. The German's eat about 5xs a day. They have 2 breakfasts, a large lunch, bread or cake in the afternoon, and a light evening meal. This was perfect timing for the prego lady. We had a danish then began our journey.
This is the walk into the center of Trier, or the Walkplatz, meaning city center. It was beautiful to walk through. Before entering the main city center, you must go through the it is old Roman gates. They were built back in the first century! Impressive and massive historical site!!
Once we entered the main city center, it is surrounded by shops, cafes, restaurants. The streets are all cobblestone and many buildings built in the 1600's are still in existence. Below is a photo of what the city center looks like on the inside. Our tour guide explained that the numbers on the building were the year they were built, not the actual street address. We passed one building with numbers of 1620! Such remarkable history.
We then went to a traditional German restaurant called, Zum Domstein. This historic restaurant has been around for several decades. They specialize in Roman meals from recipes that date back to 30AD. Artifacts on display were once belonged to the Dowager Empress Helena's palace kitchen. It had incredible food and I cleaned my plate.
After lunch, we were set off to explore the city center and stumbled upon this large cathedral, known as St. Peters Cathedral. Built atop a Constantinian palace, the cathedral holds what is believed to be Christ's tunic. The tunic is kept in a special chapel behind the altar. It was incredible inside and out.
These pictures just don't do it justice!! We then walked about the city center and eventually made our way back to the train station to enjoy our train ride back to base. It was an incredible day and I am looking forward to going back and exploring more.
